概要 This study examines the ADL function of old-old people and to the relationship between age and ADL function. Functionality generally declines with age. Age-related declines in physical and mental functioning reduce ADL function. Thus, maintaining and managing these functions results in good ADL function among elderly people. This study examined the ADL function of residents of elderly welfare facility in Japan.
Subjects were 44 people over 65 years who were receiving physical and occupational therapy exercise sessions. They were divided into two groups, the ‘old-old group (OOG; over 85 years)’ and the ‘young-old group (YOG; 65 - 84 years)’. Their medical histories included CVA, femoral neck fractures, etc. Differences between the two groups were examined using the Mann-Whitney test. Regression analysis showed that the relationship between age and scores on the Barthel Index (BI), which measures ADL function, was not significant (r: 0.069, R2 = 0.005, p>0.05).
However, total scores on the BI and the subscales ’Grooming’ and ‘Dressing’ significantly differed between the two age groups (p<0.05), but other scores did not. The OOG scored significantly higher than the YOG on ‘Grooming’ and ‘Dressing’.
The absence of a significantly correlation between age and BI scores implies that individual functions of elderly people are influenced by ageing and vary considerably.
The significant differences between the OOG and YOG on the sub-scales ’Grooming’ and ‘Dressing’ show that social and communicative activities are important in daily life.
Lifestyle is a meaningful issue for elderly people. This study also demonstrated that old-old people in Japan have good ADL function.
