概要 In the method for measuring isokinetic maximal muscle strength, it is often difficult to measure ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion movements. This is due to the instability of the foot owing to the compensatory movements of the toes and forefoot that occur while determining the measurement axis. We examined a new method for measuring the ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion movement.
For this study, 23 healthy individuals (mean age, 24.9 ± 4.9 years (SD)) were recruited and tested in 2 sessions for determining the intra-rater reliability of peak torque values for ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion movements that were generated isokinetically at 60, 90, and 120 deg/s. We fixed the foot to a footplate using elastic bandages, and 2 examiners supported the subjects by holding them in order to stabilize the position of their bodies during the measurement.
The results demonstrated that reliable values can be obtained for dorsiflexion when the subjects were in the prone position; however, the values obtained in the supine position had relatively low reliability. The intraclass correlation (ICC) values of plantar flexion at the 3 speeds ranged from 0.617 to 0.940. The values for dorsiflexion in the supine position ranged from 0.210 to 0.727 and those in the prone position, from 0.746 to 0.833.
These results demonstrate that the present method is sufficiently useful for ankle movement measurements and has a well-defined clinical protocol that is acceptable for testing different ankle movements. However, incorrect results for dorsiflexion in the supine position indicated that sufficient practice of the measurement tasks is important before the measurement sessions.
